Ingestible skincare: why your skin is hungry to be fed, not fixed
By Niki Loe in collaboration with Probeauty
Clinical skincare has never been more advanced. We have peptides, light therapies, regenerative treatments, barrier repair technology, precision actives.
And yet the skin remains a living organ – sustained by blood flow, oxygen, nutrients, immune signalling, circadian rhythm, and mitochondrial function.
We can stimulate it. We can resurface it. We can regulate it.
But we cannot out-treat systemic depletion.
And this is why ingestible skincare is moving out of the trend-zone and into non-negotiable territory.
Your skin is having a human experience
Your skin has been there with you throughout every moment of your life.
It is lived in. It has carried stress. Scars. Maybe even babies. Your skin has adapted, defended, protected, and healed – many times over. To suggest the skin needs “fixing” implies dysfunction. But in most cases, the skin is not malfunctioning. It is responding.
Responding to:
The nutrients it received.
The quality of those nutrients.
The sleep it got.
The inflammation it carried.
Messages from the gut-skin axis.
The stress hormones it is navigating.
But the skin also reflects joy: Movement. Hydration. Sunlight. Connection.
It is rarely “broken”. But it may be under-resourced. And under-resourced systems don’t need correction. They need nourishment.
The skin you’re working with might just be hungry. Hungry for nutrients. For rest. For magnesium. For someone to explain it all properly. The longevity approach requires us to treat and feed the skin.
Ingestible skincare is biological – not cosmetic
When we speak about ingestible skincare, we’re talking about the nutrition required to feed, build and sustain the structure of the skin we are treating.
Not in place of cosmetic treatments, but to optimise them. Ingestible skincare supports the requirements of the skin at the source.
Let’s break that down clearly:
REPLENISHING NUTRIENT INSUFFICIENCY
Just 1 in 10 New Zealanders meet the minimum recommended daily intake of fruit and vegetables. That recommendation reflects a baseline need to function – not the required dose for optimal performance.
Micronutrients such as vitamin C, zinc, selenium, and essential fatty acids are required for collagen synthesis, antioxidant defence, and barrier repair.
When intake is inadequate, the skin adapts accordingly. You cannot synthesise strong collagen without substrates. And you can’t resolve oxidative stress without antioxidant support. Feeding the skin means ensuring the raw materials are present.
MITOCHONDRIAL EFFICIENCY
Every skin cell relies on mitochondria to produce ATP – the energy currency required for renewal, repair, and wound healing.
Sleep deprivation, chronic stress, metabolic dysfunction, and ageing all influence mitochondrial efficiency. When mitochondrial output declines, regeneration slows.
Nutrients such as B vitamins, magnesium, polyphenols, and NAD+ precursors support the biochemical pathways that maintain cellular energy production. Ingestible skincare, at this level, becomes metabolic support.
BARRIER LIPID PRODUCTION
The skin barrier is not just a topical phenomenon. Ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids form the lipid matrix that prevents transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and maintains skin resilience.
Essential fatty acids must be consumed from our diet – they are called “essential” because the body cannot produce them on their own. Internal lipid availability directly influences barrier integrity. When lipid intake or absorption is compromised, barrier dysfunction often follows.
Hydration is not just about what we apply – it depends on what the body can produce.
COLLAGEN SYNTHESIS
Age is not the only factor influencing collagen production and abundance. Collagen is influenced by nutrient status, inflammation, and glycation.
Fibroblasts in the skin require vitamin C, amino acids (glycine, proline, hydroxyproline), zinc, and copper to synthesise structurally sound collagen.
Oral collagen peptides provide bioavailable amino acids that support dermal density and elasticity when combined with adequate cofactors.
And without internal support, topical stimulation has limited substrate to work with. Structure requires supply.
THE INFLAMMATORY RESPONSE
Low-grade chronic inflammation accelerates collagen breakdown, impairs barrier recovery, and increases sensitivity.
Inflammation is influenced by:
- Gut microbiome balance
- Glycaemic variability – how the body responds to blood sugar fluctuations
- Sleep quality
- Oxidative stress
- Psychological stress
Polyphenols, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidant nutrients help modulate inflammatory signalling pathways. And reducing inflammatory load internally creates a more stable environment for visible skin repair.
GUT-SKIN-IMMUNE COMMUNICATION
Gut dysbiosis can alter cytokine signalling to the skin. Nutrient malabsorption can influence barrier integrity. Chronic digestive stress can amplify inflammatory responses.
Clients with acne, rosacea, eczema, or premature ageing often present with underlying digestive imbalance or nutrient depletion.
When we address the internal terrain:
- Inflammation can settle. Healing capacity improves. Barrier resilience strengthens.
The gut-skin-immune axis is an increasingly validated area of research in dermatology and immunology – guiding a more integrated clinical approach to skincare.
Ingestible skincare becomes less about “boosting glow” and more about restoring biological stability. But for the record, I think I speak for all of us when I say – “boosting glow” is still very much on my clinical wish list.
This is where KIKI Health fits
When we talk about ingestible skincare in clinic, we’re not talking about adding another retail item. A Kiki Health formula is less of an add-on and more about offering a science-led solution to a client’s need – and treating it at the source.
A structured internal strategy. Positioned not as a correction, but as prevention and performance support.

Layered strategically, these formulas top up our internal resources and support longevity – not only for the skin, but for every known body system.
Nutrition and targeted supplementation set the stage.
Your professional treatments accelerate results.
And daily products protect what you gain.
Why this matters for clinics
This is not about stepping outside your scope. It’s about expanding the clinical experience.
When you integrate targeted internal nutrition:
You support results between treatments.
You improve recovery post-procedure.
You enhance barrier restoration.
You deepen client education, which deepens client trust.
You increase treatment longevity.
And commercially?
You increase client lifetime value.
You deepen connection.
You practice at the full depth of your expertise.
The clinics leading this shift are not abandoning topicals. They’re upgrading the entire experience. Surface with systemic. Treatment with nourishment. Results that last.
That is the longevity model.
The longevity mindset
Our clients are informed, curious, proactive, and they want change they can both see and feel, beyond skin-deep. Your client doesn’t want to be told they are ageing at an accelerated rate, or that their skin is failing them.
They want to know how they can get their skin and their health to perform better. How to recover faster and to feel more energised.
We all want our skin to glow because our systems are well-fed and glowing is just what the skin does when it has what it needs.
Ingestible skincare aligns with this shift. It reframes the conversation from: “How do we correct this?”
To: “How do we get this to look, feel and perform better?”
The business case for feeding skin
Longevity-led clinics are leading the way forward. They are focusing on the human being, not just the packaging they arrive in.
The longevity conversation is no longer niche. It’s everywhere – podcasts, research, conferences and clinical practice.
We’re talking about
- Gut health
- NAD+
- Mitochondrial function
- Biohacking
- Preventative inflammageing
Clients are no longer passively receiving information. They are actively researching it. And they’re looking for guidance they can trust. Clinics that confidently educate on ingestible skincare:
- Increase trust
- Increase credibility
- Increase retention
Because when a client understands the “why,” they are invested in committing to the “how.”
Ingestible skincare deepens that understanding.
That’s exactly why this collaboration exists
This isn’t just about stocking supplements. It’s about upgrading our clinical education and your client experience.
Probeauty, KIKI Health and Niki Loe have built a comprehensive training library designed especially for skin experts.
- Webinars. A training library. Clinical breakdowns.
- Formula deep-dives
- Client-facing scripts
- Longevity positioning tools
This isn’t about becoming a nutritionist. It’s about integrating evidence-led skin-health strategies that elevate treatment outcomes.
We’re giving you the tools to integrate internal support holistically, safely and commercially.
This is where skin meets systems. Where topical excellence meets internal strategy. Where treatment becomes a longevity experience.
Let’s stop fighting our skin. And start feeding it.
With love, for all skinkind.
